The Acer Swift 16 AI is a 16-inch laptop with Intel’s Panther Lake hardware. Thanks to Panther Lake, this machine is incredible, with high CPU performance, enough GPU performance for PC gaming, and long battery life. Performance is solid even when running on battery power, too — even gaming performance is decent on battery!

At a premium $1,899 price point, some of this laptop’s components are incredible: The OLED display is absolutely beautiful and the huge haptic trackpad feels amazing. Other components are less than ideal, though. The glossy display surface is prone to reflections, and the webcam is on the grainy side. Still, $1,899 comes in a few hundred bucks below other competing laptops, many of which are arriving at $2,000 or above.

But display reflections aside, the Acer Swift 16 AI shines thanks to its Intel hardware, OLED display, and Acer’s awesome trackpad. Panther Lake is a real generational leap. As one of the first Panther Lake laptops I’ve spent time with, this may be one of the best laptops I’ve ever used.

Acer Swift 16 AI: Specs

The Acer Swift 16 AI includes a high-end Intel Panther Lake processor and GPU. The Intel Core Ultra X7 358H is a 16-core CPU that delivers impressive performance combined with serious power efficiency for long battery life. This machine also has a high-end Intel Arc B390 GPU, which Intel says delivers performance on par with an Nvidia GeForce RTX 4050. Acer rounds it out with 32GB of RAM and a 1TB PCIe Gen5 SSD.

Panther Lake also has an NPU that meets Microsoft’s Copilot+ PC requirements. With an NPU delivering 50 trillion operations per second (TOPS) of performance, you can use Windows 11’s Copilot+ PC features on this machine.

This is serious hardware. Thanks to Intel Panther Lake, this machine should be able to provide snappy desktop performance, long battery life, and even decent PC gaming performance. And that’s exactly what we saw in our benchmarks, as we’ll see below.

Acer Swift 16 AI: Design and build quality

The Acer Swift 16 AI is a 16-inch laptop with an aluminum chassis, weighing in at 3.42 pounds. The machine feels solid, and it’s a reasonable weight for a 16-inch machine, especially one that can deliver this level of CPU and GPU performance.

The hinge is sturdy, and it’s easy to open with one hand. The hinge opens to 180 degrees so the machine can lie flat, but it doesn’t go any further back.

Despite the powerful hardware here, the Acer Swift 16 AI’s fans weren’t particularly loud, even while playing Doom: The Dark Ages — albeit on low settings. The keyboard stayed a comfortable temperature while gaming, too.

The Acer Swift 16 AI we reviewed had a silver chassis with corresponding silver highlights. Acer says the actual model it will be selling in the US is dark gray and features gold highlights and lines instead of silver ones, with a simple gold “Acer” logo on the left of the lid and no gray “Acer Swift” logo. While the lid of the review unit looks rather plain, the model Acer plans on selling in the US has a more distinctive visual appearance.

The 16-inch Acer Swift 16 AI has a large keyboard complete with a number pad at the right side. Some people love the number pad on a laptop of this size, while some prefer laptops without number pads, but that’s a matter of personal taste. The keyboard has a white backlight.

The Acer Swift 16 AI’s chiclet keyboard feels responsive and comfortable to type on, but the action on the bottom of the keys is a little soft — it feels a little shallow, and there’s a flex to the keyboard when you press down. It’s a reasonable keyboard, but it’s nowhere near as premium an experience as the trackpad.

The trackpad is amazing. It’s huge, and it’s a haptic trackpad: You can click down wherever you want on it. It’s smooth and responsive with a Corning Gorilla Glass surface — glass trackpads like this one just feel nicer. The trackpad supports active pen input. When you hover the pen over the trackpad, you’ll see a cursor, showing where the pen input will happen on screen.

That pen experience isn’t quite what you’d expect. The pen only works on the trackpad itself, not on the touchscreen, which lacks the appropriate digitizer.

It’s nice to have, but it’s better for small touchups than note writing or drawing across a large display. I imagine most people who want pen input would want to use the pen directly on the display, as I can’t imagine writing notes in OneNote with the pen on the trackpad.

Acer Swift 16 AI: Display and speakers

The Acer Swift 16 AI’s display has excellent picture quality, and it’s a real highlight. The 16-inch 2880×1800 OLED panel here has a 120Hz refresh rate, and it delivers beautiful, vivid colors with good contrast. Paired with the impressive Intel GPU here, this machine provides a decent gaming experience.

While Acer says this panel is rated for 340 nits of brightness, the actual brightness here seems closer to 450 nits. It’s brighter than I expected it to be, and Acer says released models will have the same unexpectedly bright panel. That’s a pleasant surprise. This machine also supports HDR.

The glossy screen is, unfortunately, a downside. While the OLED panel is shiny and vivid, it’s prone to reflections. Using it in my home office on a winter day, I can see visible reflections even at maximum brightness thanks to the soft daylight coming through the window. Outdoors, it would be even more challenging.

More brightness can compensate for the glare, so the extra brightness on this OLED panel does help. However, it doesn’t fix the problem. How bad the reflections will be for you depends on where you’ll use the laptop, and many people do prefer a glossy and vivid panel over a more muted matte display.

This laptop’s speakers have plenty of volume, and they produce a clear sound. More bass would be nice, but the speakers are decent for laptop speakers in this price range.

Acer Swift 16 AI: Webcam, microphone, biometrics

The Acer Swift 16 AI’s 1080p webcam produced a somewhat grainy picture. While you could get by with this in a video meeting, the webcam doesn’t shine in the way the display and trackpad do. If you want to look as good as possible in video meetings, you’ll want another laptop.

The webcam does have a physical privacy shutter, which is always nice to have.

The triple microphone array on this machine picked up loud and clearly audible audio, and they did a great job of canceling out ambient background noise. However, the sound was a little muffled. This isn’t the crystal-clear microphone experience you’ll find on higher-end business laptops optimized for video meetings.

The Acer Swift 16 AI has an IR camera for facial recognition, so you can sign into your PC with Windows Hello. It doesn’t have a fingerprint reader.

Acer Swift 16 AI: Connectivity

The Acer Swift 16 AI has a good selection of ports. On the left, it has two USB Type-C (Thunderbolt 4) ports, a USB Type-A port, and an HDMI 2.1 out port. This machine charges via USB Type-C, so you’ll be plugging the charger cable into one of these ports.

On the right side, this machine has a USB Type-A port, a combo audio jack, and a microSD card reader. Overall, it’s a good setup, although there’s no Kensington lock slot here.

Thanks to Panther Lake, this machine supports speedy Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 5.4 wireless standards.

Acer Swift 16 AI: Performance

The Acer Swift 16 AI promises serious performance thanks to Intel’s Panther Lake hardware. With an Intel Core Ultra X7 358H and an Intel Arc B390 GPU, it should deliver amazing performance. It delivered excellent performance in day-to-day desktop productivity tasks, and I even managed to play Doom: The Dark Ages with a very playable framerate.

As always, we ran the Acer Swift 16 AI through our standard benchmarks to quantify just how well it performs. For this machine’s benchmarks, I used Windows 11’s Settings app to set the Acer Swift 16 AI to “Best Performance” while plugged in.

First, we run PCMark 10 to get an idea of overall system performance. This is an overall system benchmark, but it’s particularly focused on CPU performance. The Acer Swift 16 AI produced an overall PCMark 10 score of 10,474, which is incredible. Intel is delivering amazing performance with Panther Lake.

Interestingly enough, the MSI Prestige Flip 14 AI+ has the same CPU, and it benchmarked at a score of 8,184 in our tests. My colleague Mark Knapp benchmarked that machine, so I can’t compare them personally. However, that smaller 14-inch machine had a power plan configured more for power efficiency during the benchmarking process, and that makes a huge difference.

Next, we run Cinebench R20. This is a heavily multithreaded benchmark that focuses on overall CPU performance. It’s a quick benchmark, so cooling under extended workloads isn’t a factor. But, since it’s heavily multithreaded, CPUs with more cores have a huge advantage.

The Acer Swift 16 AI racked up a Cinebench R20 score of 7,704, delivering impressive multithreaded CPU performance.

We also run an encode with Handbrake. This is another heavily multithreaded benchmark, but it runs over an extended period. This demands the laptop’s cooling kick in, and many laptops will throttle and slow down under load.

The Acer Swift 16 AI completed the encode process in an average of 882 seconds — that’s just under 15 minutes. It’s a great score for a machine like this one. While it’s a bit behind AMD’s Ryzen AI 7 350 hardware, this machine delivers much longer battery life.

Next, we run a graphical benchmark. This isn’t branded as a gaming laptop, but the Intel Arc B390 GPU delivers enough performance to provide a decent gaming experience. We run 3DMark Time Spy, a graphical benchmark that focuses on GPU performance.

The Acer Swift 16 AI delivered a score of 7,016 in 3DMark Time Spy. That’s substantially above laptops with Intel’s previous-generation Arc graphics. It’s also noticeably below the Acer Swift X 14 AI, which has a current-generation Nvidia GeForce RTX 5060 GPU.

While Intel made a huge leap, most gamers will still prefer laptops with discrete GPUs. But Intel’s proven that laptops with integrated graphics can deliver a decent gaming experience, and that’s huge.

Impressively, GPU performance didn’t seem to drop substantially when I unplugged the laptop. The Intel Arc B390 GPU played Doom: The Dark Ages well on battery power, too.

Overall, the Acer Swift 16 AI delivered seriously impressive performance. For a 16-inch laptop coming in at 3.42 pounds, especially one with fairly quiet fans and high battery life, this is excellent.

Acer Swift 16 AI: Battery life

The Acer Swift 16 AI has a 70 Watt-hour battery, and Intel’s Panther Lake hardware promises serious battery life. It did deliver extremely high battery life — but nowhere near some other Panther Lake machines. Still, this should get you through a workday — and probably more.

To benchmark the battery life, we play a 4K copy of Tears of Steel on repeat on Windows 11 with airplane mode enabled until the laptop suspends itself. We set the screen to 250 nits of brightness for our battery benchmarks. This is a best-case scenario for any laptop since local video playback is so efficient, and real battery life in day-to-day use is always going to be less than this.

The Acer Swift 16 AI lasted for an average of 1,108 minutes. That’s nearly eighteen and a half hours. This result only looks middling on the chart above because the MSI Prestige Flip 14 AI+ lasted for over 30 hours — a shocking result. The Acer Swift 16 AI likely has a display that uses significantly more power than that MSI laptop.

You won’t get eighteen hours in the real world, but a result like this one demonstrates you should get through a workday — and probably more — although it depends on your usage. However, this is incredible — it should be more than enough battery life for everyone. Unless you’re looking for the absolute maximum battery life to spend days away from a power outlet, the Acer Swift 16 AI delivers more than enough battery life.

Acer Swift 16 AI: Conclusion

The Acer Swift 16 AI is an incredible machine with amazing performance. It will likely be less expensive than many competing Panther Lake machines with similar hardware, which makes it a good choice, especially if you can find it on sale.

However, it’s worth comparing prices and specs. For $1,899, I would pause and think before buying this laptop because of the glare factor alone. Do you want a glossy OLED display? That’s a matter of personal taste, and many people prefer the vivid OLED experience, even at the cost of reflectivity. But, since this is a laptop with long battery life that you may use on the go, a glossy display feels like a real downside.

On the other hand, let’s be honest: If my biggest nitpick is a glossy display, that shows just how good this laptop is.

While the display is a matter of personal preference, the rest of the machine largely shines. The Acer Swift 16 AI is amazing thanks to Panther Lake, the beautiful OLED panel, and that compelling trackpad.
